When trying to imagine success, you might find that you instead keep running up against the same blank wall — or maybe even just confront your own hangups, insecurities, and self doubts over and over again.
While it can be very powerful and helping to be able to visually success for yourself before embarking on a particular endeavor, it’s very important to keep in mind that you don’t actually have to be able to envision success in order to make it happen — or to, a the very least, undertake an ambitious project and benefit from it significantly.
Instead of getting too hung up on whether you can see the path forward yet or not, or whether you can envision yourself succeeding or not, simply make a point of opening yourself up to the possibility that your own assumptions may be limited and flawed — and that by embarking on a journey of discovery, great things may come your way.
Sometimes, what’s really needed is the ability to open yourself up to the mystery of the unknown, and to step away from your own assumptions.
Take the first step on the path towards a goal, instead of talking yourself out of it
The human mind can be an extremely powerful thing — with the conscious, reasoning, “discursive” part of the mind having a lot of power in particular.
This part of the mind — where our inner monologue rambles on and on endlessly — unfortunately doesn’t always help to give us a running pep talk, or to motivate us to undertake exciting projects that can add a lot of texture, light, and energy to our lives.
In fact, it may be significantly more likely that you find yourself dealing with “negative self talk” on an ongoing basis, than that you’ll find yourself inundated with feel-good inner dialogue, motivation, and all the rest.
The bottom line is that we all tend to be quite good at talking ourselves out of different goals and ideas we might feel drawn to pursue. While it can certainly be important to know of the various factors that may cause you to reconsider your goal or the path you’re on, however, it’s also important to realize that there will always be excuses for the individual who is seeking them out.
Maybe you should pass up on a gym session because you’re feeling exhausted, or because there’s a more important social commitment to take care of. But it’s also possible that you’re just coming up with rationalizations and narratives that help you to stay in your comfort zone.
“There’s no point going today anyway, because it’s already a bit late and…,” “well, my favorite gym outfit is in the wash, so I may as well stay at home…,” “I think I might still feel a bit stiff from my last workout, better stay in today instead…” — these are just a few examples of the kinds of things that you may hear when talking yourself out of pursuing a goal.
To really undertake an exciting project, it’s important not to give yourself too much of a chance to talk yourself out of it.
Instead, make a point of simply taking the first step to move towards your goal. The first step will help you to generate momentum, motivation, and perspective — and each subsequent step along the way will help to support and further develop this.
Tune in to your own inner sense of fascination and meaning
In order to identify an exciting project to undertake — and to ensure that you actually have the motivation to go for it, and to enjoy it — it’s important to actually tune in to your own inner sense of fascination and meaning.
Instead of just picking up some project that sounds good on paper, but that you don’t really find particularly interesting or motivating in and of itself, opt instead to take up a project that you actually feel drawn to and enthusiastic about.
Many of the great benefits of working on an exciting project can be directly connected to the fact that there are striking psychological benefits to doing something each day that you feel genuinely enthusiastic about and motivated by.
At the same time, many of the other benefits of working on any kind of project at all, come over a relatively prolonged period of time via being consistent.
Taking up projects that you feel a sense of fascination and meaning towards, is a great way of ensuring that you have more resilience and drive with regards to those projects, too.
