If you’ve ever taken the time to appreciate the beauty of a diamond, sapphire, or ruby, you probably know a lot about its properties. Some are cherished for their beauty, and others use it for a gemstone’s utility. Jewelry made from beautiful gemstones is prized for its beauty and rarity.
Gemstones
Tanzanite
Tanzanite is a relatively new gem, having been discovered in 1967. This beautiful blue gem is the color of the deepest part of the ocean. As with all gems, beauty is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to tanzanite. Some people see its rich blue color and think, “Ocean.” Others are reminded of deep violets, pansies, or other flowers.
Topaz
Topaz is a gemstone that is prized for its beauty. It comes in many colors and has been used in jewelry and cut stones since recorded history. Topaz is one of the most popular gems. Still, eight others have similar physical properties: amethyst, citrine, blue topaz, yellow topaz, colorless topaz, chrysoberyl, golden topaz, and pink topaz.
Aquamarine
Aquamarine is the gem variety of the mineral beryl. The term ‘aquamarine’ is derived from the Latin word aqua marinus, which means water of the sea. Even though it’s called aquamarine, it’s not the same as the sea we swim in. If you find aquamarine with a deep, rich color, it most likely came from Brazil. Standard colors range from blue-green to green, and many people like to wear them because they match their eyes.
Diamonds
Diamonds are the most popular choice in modern jewelry because they appear colorless and can be cut into brilliant shapes. The ancient Greeks believed that diamonds contained the power to protect people from illness or injury, and today diamonds are still considered a symbol of love and romance. Read this James Allen review for more info.
Emeralds
Emeralds are also popular jewelry choices for both men and women. Emerald is one of two mineral varieties of the element chromium. Chromium is what gives emerald its green color and has properties that enhance the appearance of this mineral. Emeralds are also very durable gems, which is why they are often used in rings.
Sapphires
Sapphires are another popular choice for gemstones because they come in every color except red. Sapphire is a specific type of corundum, one of the most abundant minerals on earth. While ruby is also a form of corundum, sapphire contains more aluminum, whereas red ruby contains chromium.
Rubies
Rubies are famous for their rarity and intense red color. By definition, rubies are any red gemstones that have a few inclusions. It’s these inclusions that give rubies their beautiful red color.
Beauty is In the Eye
In addition to their beauty, most gemstones that are mined have symbolic meanings attached to them. For example, when looking through a diamond’s colorful display, you can see white light divided into all its colors. Therefore diamonds were once considered a symbol of clarity in your life path.
Did you know that lapis lazuli, a beautiful deep blue gemstone, was prized over gold in ancient Sumeria? It’s why I talk about it a lot in my upcoming novel.
The most valuable gems are also the rarest. Diamonds, emeralds, and rubies can be expensive, especially if they are large in size or of more delicate quality. Sapphires, tanzanite, and topaz are not as rare, but they still make beautiful gemstones.
