With centuries of history, culture and breathtaking beauty, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to visualizing the most Instagrammable spots on the Ionian Islands.
In recent years, these Greek islands have become a major draw for those looking for the perfect spot to photograph, but since all are so stunning it is difficult to decide which one can claim the crown of being most Instagrammable.
While the Ionian Islands are home to some of the most Instagrammable spots in Greece, capturing their beauty need not end after the photo shoots as there are scores of places to relax and take pictures.
For example, Ionian & Aegean villa holidays offer its guests the perfect opportunity to stay and unwind in some luxurious and captivating villas and at the same time take captivating photos of the best spots on the Ionian Islands to fill your Instagram photo feed.
These spots have been chosen not because of their beauty alone, but each has a story to tell as well, something which means a lot to the locals.
Oia, Santorini
Famous for its stunning sunsets, whitewashed houses and spectacular views of the Aegean Sea, Santorini tops the list of the most pictures on Instagram.
Arguably one of the most Instagrammable spots in Greece is Oia, which enjoys a prime location on a cliffside overlooking the island of Thirassia and is known for its trendy cafes, restaurants and a plethora of shops selling souvenirs.
If you are lucky to find yourself in Santorini, there are photo opportunities practically around every corner and it will be difficult to put your camera down. Also, you will get a chance to capture one of the most stunning sunsets in Greece.
Despite the high prices as compared to the rest of Santorini, it is impossible to find a scenic spot in a cafe during the peak rush hours anywhere in Oia.
Our advice is to visit this place between September and early October, when the crowds have long gone and the weather is absolutely perfect.
Canal d’Amour, Corfu
With over a million posts, the island of Corfu is one of the top five Instagrammable Ionian Islands and a party hub of the Britishers.
When you are quite finished with partying, you might want to capture a picture or two of Corfu’s most intimate inlet, Canal d’ Armour.
Formed over the centuries due to the gentle erosion of the wind and the waters of the Mediterranean Sea,on this natural hollow inlet of sandstone you will have a hard time putting away your camera.
Porto Katsiki Beach,Lefkada
Porto Katsiki, or the Goat Port lived up to its name as it could only be accessed by climbing mountains when it was established in the 90s since there was no road connectivity in this idyllic island during that time.
Today, this has all changed as there is plenty of parking space for those who throng here from early morning to come to this picturesque beach.
Once you come down the precarious staircase that leads to Katsiki Beach, you will step on soft pebbles against a backdrop of towering limestone cliffs, fringed by the turquoise waters of the shallow sea. If you get the angle right, your snap will be an instant hit on social media.
Blue Caves Zakynthos
Zakynthos or Zante, is another famous party island and has featured on Instagram innumerable times. While Laganas is the place to be if you want to let your hair down, there are also the legendary Blue Caves for a once-in-a-lifetime photo-op.
A morning cruise to the western side of Zante is an elegant row of partly covered chambers and an impressive row of limestone arches that play a trick of light to truly express the color of blue, unlike you may find anywhere else on earth.
Regular boats ply from Porto Vromi and Agios Nikolaos to Karithi where these impressive grottos are located.
Windmills of Mykonos
While the streets of Little Venice are great for that all-important instal snap, the windmills of Chora take up the most images on the island, known to be hit with celebrities.
These windmills were built by the enterprising Venetians way back in the 16th century, and though none of them are in a working condition, they do provide a ravishing photo opportunity in a cluster of five located in the Alefkandra Quarter of Mykonos.
There is also a solitary windmill named Boni, just off the harbor, which is equally pretty and also houses a nice little museum full of interesting facts about the island.
The windmills are the most quintessential feature of the island and can be seen from every point in Mykonos Chora as a reminder of the virile past of the island.
Panagia Kathariotissa Monastery, Ithaca
The Panagia Kathariotissa Monastery in Ithaca has been the spiritual center of the island for more than four hundred years and this scenic institution is strategically perched on a hill,550m above sea level.
Once there, you will be instantly mesmerized by its red stone exterior and the model of Virgin Mary, which the locals believe was hand painted by Saint Luke himself and serves as a symbol of protection for the island.
Not surprisingly, the monastery has survived many natural disasters and revolutions down the centuries. This institution in Moni Katharon in Ithaca is a photographer’s delight.
Melissani Cave,Kefalonia
Famous for its azure waters and stunning geological formations, Melissani Cave is a true natural wonder of not only Kefalonia but the entire country as well.
The beauties of this photogenic cavern are best captured on film between 11am in the morning to 2pm in the afternoon when the rays of the sun are at the perfect angle turning the water of the cave to a deep sapphire blue.
Guests should note that there is a shortage of parking spots during these hours and so they are well advised to start early from the port terminal and consider going by bike as the route also offers some quintessential photo taking opportunities.
Navagio, Zakynthos
Navagio, which was previously known as Agios Georgios,is one of the most Instagrammable beaches on the Ionian Islands, located on the west coast of Zakynthos, near the village of Anafonitria.
The island got its name “shipwreck” after a boat named Panagiotis was washed away on its shores in the 1980s.
Surrounded by white vertical stone cliffs emerging from the clear blue turquoise waters and the sight of a ship rising up from the sandy bed is a sight to behold. No wonder it is one of the most photographed spots in the whole of Greece.
