When natural disasters hit, they don’t give much warning. Sure, you can have an idea of what season they might hit, like the spring or summer months, and you might have an idea of what to do and how to recover after a natural disaster, but what about right then and there when it’s actually happening?
Specifically, how can you protect your house, your home, and your investment? Whether it’s a tornado, a hurricane, or a severe thunderstorm, protecting your home is crucial (that doesn’t even explain the sheer importance). While you can’t control the weather, you can definitely prepare your house to stand up to it. So, with that all said, let’s go ahead and dive into some ways you can safeguard your home from Mother Nature’s wild side.
Is Your Roof Secure?
So basically, whether it’s strong winds or heavy rains, a sturdy roof can stop water leaks and prevent structural damage (among other things). Before storm season hits, it’s a good idea to get a roofing contractor like Elite Exteriors to inspect it. They’ll look for loose shingles, leaks, and any weak spots that might cause problems down the road. There might be a chance that it’s more loose on top of your house than you might think. Your roof could be damaged right now, and you have no idea until someone is up there and seeing it for themselves.
But in the meantime (as contractors book out quickly in the summer months), you could look into hurricane clips or straps to give your roof some extra support. If you live in an area like tornado alley (or anywhere in the Midwest) or somewhere that hurricanes hit (like Florida and Louisiana), it’s a good idea to get these.
Install Some Storm Shutters for Your Windows
As you might already know, windows are one of the most vulnerable parts of your house during a storm, and shattered glass can cause some serious damage. So it might be a good idea to look into getting some storm shutters. So, if you live somewhere like Florida, you’ve probably seen these, and if you’ve ever been to Australia, you might have noticed a lot of exterior houses have them, too.
These are honestly a fantastic investment since they protect your windows (they’re installed on the outside) from strong winds and debris. You can also get them for your doors.
Always Trim Your Trees and Secure Loose Objects
Have you ever noticed how strong winds turn everything into a flying object? That’s why it’s important to trim any large trees near your house before storm season hits. Yes, that’s right, and overhanging branches can easily snap off and damage your roof, windows, or even power lines.
You’ll also want to bring in any outdoor furniture, planters, or decorations that could go airborne. A lot of homeowners make the mistake of just assuming their furniture, trampolines, toys, and whatever else will be just fine- but it’s not always the case.
Do You Have a Basement or Cellar?
If you have an underground space, then there might come a time (if not already) when you’re going to need it to keep yourself safe from a tornado, so if you have doors or windows around your basement, you’ll need to install shutters on those too, and ideally have some supplies to stock up on.
