Life coaching questions: Seeing a life coach for the first time is a daunting prospect for many people. A coach will delve into your psyche and work with you to uncover the root of any issues that could prevent you from reaching your goals.
At your first session, or potentially even during the initial assessment, a coach will probably come prepared with some key questions. Your answers will provide them with a basis for how to structure the sessions, and also offer a key insight into your thoughts and general outlook on life.

‘What do you want to achieve?’
This is one of the most important and fundamental questions a life coach will ask you. It will help to create the foundations on which your sessions together will be built, and will ensure the meetings remain on the right track at all times.
Maybe you want a promotion, or to gain more confidence when speaking to new people. Your coach will translate these desires into achievable goals, which can be worked towards in your sessions.
‘What does success look like to you?’
Success doesn’t come from simply reaching your end goals. Success could be gleaned from certain achievements along the way, or from side effects of your overall target. For instance, are you looking for a promotion to further your personal development, or is it purely for financial reasons? By outlining what success would look like for you, your coach can tailor sessions to help you make more positive changes in your daily life to reach your end goals.
‘What’s stopping you?’
Direct but powerful. Not only that, but it’s asking to address your stumbling blocks, which is going to be an incredibly helpful as well as an insightful process. You may not even know what is preventing you from reaching your goals.
Whether you lack confidence, are afraid of failure, or simply don’t know where to start, life coaching is all about overcoming such issues to get to where you want to be.
‘If you achieve this goal, will it bring lasting or only temporary fulfillment?’
Not all goals are created equal, and your life coach is going to make sure that your aims are both attainable and healthy. This question is going to ensure you’re on the right path and is a sign that your coach truly wants the best for you.
Life coaches don’t want you to put your efforts into something that isn’t realistic for you to achieve in the time frame you’ve set. Instead, they’ll build up your confidence and skills so that whatever goals you set for yourself in the future, you’ll be able to reach them with continued effort.
‘If you don’t change *bad habit*, what will it cost you in the long run?’
Nobody is perfect, but if your flaws mean you aren’t reaching your potential, ask yourself how things are ever going to change if you don’t work on them.
Bad habits can include procrastination, a lack of accountability, irresponsible behavior, and so much more. Your life coach isn’t there to tell you off. They just want you to see the bigger picture because their primary focus is to get you to succeed.
Whatever your bad habits are, realizing how they are holding you back through life coaching might just give you the motivation you need to eliminate them you’ve never had before.
