Thinking about moving to a new state? There’s a lot to love about living in the modern world, including the ability to move elsewhere in the country or across the world. This is something that was technically possible in days gone by, but which was much more difficult than it is today. However, while it’s easier than it was in the past, it’s not as if it’s easy.
There are challenges to upending your life and moving elsewhere. And this isn’t always given the amount of consideration as perhaps it should be. In this blog post, we’re going to run through some of the more overlooked factors that people forget about.
Considerations for Moving to a New State
The Cost of Living
If you’re moving for work, then you’ll need to look beyond the amount of money that your new employers will pay you. You’ll also need to look at the overall cost of living. $50,000 a year might take you far in, say, Nebraska, but it’ll be hard to live a comfortable life in New York on the amount of money. As well as the cost of housing, food, etc., look at the taxes. You might end up with more money overall, even if the cost of living is higher, just because the taxes in your new state are lower.
The New Threats
You’ll likely know how to run a home where you currently live. But that doesn’t mean that you’ll have the same understanding of how to run a property in your new state. Why? Because there’s every chance that the conditions are different. If you currently live in Michigan, then you’ll know how to handle snowy conditions. But what if you’re moving to Florida? Then, it’s not snow that’ll threaten your home, but hurricanes. In that scenario, it’d be a good idea to look for ‘impact windows near me.’ No matter where you’re moving, be sure to speak to locals to figure out what issues they contend with.
Logistical Issues
You’ll also need to think about some logistical issues. For example, how are you going to move all of your belongings from one place to another? Rather than handling this job yourself, it’s usually best to hand the work over to a professional company, especially if you’re transporting an entire home’s worth of belongings. Also, your car: will it be suitable for the terrain of your new state? A car that was suitable for the flat Ohio terrain won’t work as well in mountainous regions, for instance.
Things Aren’t That Different
Finally, remember that while moving to a new state can be exciting and offers the chance to get a fresh start, it’s not as if everything will be different. This is still the United States, after all. So don’t expect your life to change in drastic ways. It can help to push you in the right direction, but won’t solve all of your issues. If you’re looking for a radically different life, then it may be better to move to a different country.
