As a seasoned traveler and a fantasy romance author, I find Scotland’s spring both challenging and invigorating. I was there last April as I published Fae Gods (my third book in 31 days), and spent most of my time in the Highlands and Orkney. If you’ve followed me for a while, you know that I never go back to the same country twice—unless I have to.
Out of the nearly 40 countries I’ve visited so far, Scotland is my favorite.
It’s hardly a surprise that a year later I’m headed back, voluntarily, for Sam Heughan’s My Peak Challenge annual gala. So you never end up like me, underdressed in a day-long rain storm at The Fairy Pools … Here’s my pragmatic guide for female travelers seeking comfort, function, and style.
The Packing List
Here’s what to bring so you have ultimate comfort and style in Scotland. Spring isn’t typically super rainy, but it is a bit chilly.
Umbrella
This was the day after getting caught in the rain at the Fairy Pools. See all the makeup around the collar? Don’t let that happen to you and be sure to pack an umbrella—one that’s big enough to help keep sideways rain off of you. This is the umbrella I’m bringing this time because it’s windproof (up to 70 mph), large, and compact.

Waterproof Hiking Shoes
Not just for the rugged trails, but also for the city’s wet cobblestones. These shoes are a necessity for dry, comfortable feet during sudden showers. And if you plan on spending any time on Orkney or in the Highlands, you’ll want these. Some of those trails can be pretty slick.
Parka
It’s important to wear layers, as the weather changes as often. It’s not unheard of to experience all four seasons in a day. By layering, you can take off layers as needed, or add them, too. I’d layer this parka over a down jacket.
Women’s Hoodies
Edinburgh mornings can be brisk. A hoodie offers warmth without the bulk, essential for layering under a jacket or over a t-shirt. When not in use, you could keep it tied around your waist when the weather inevitably changes.
Pashmina Scarf
There’s something about red against a majestic, green landscape that just pops. This is the pashmina scarf I recommend and am seen wearing in this picture. I love wearing a black outfit with a bright splash of color to really add contrast to a photo. Not only that, but it’s large, and so soft.
Women’s Tracksuits
Comfort is key on flights. A tracksuit offers ease without sacrificing style, and is perfect for transitioning from the airport to immediate sightseeing.
Are you planning your own Scottish escape or dreaming of one? Whether it’s for the wild landscapes or the urban charm, remember that the right gear can make all the difference. And if you’ve got Scottish travel tips or packing hacks of your own, drop them in the comments—I’d love to hear them!
