Coconut oil is one of my absolute favorites! This is the first of a series of posts I’ll make about coconut oil.
So, what is it…exactly? It’s the fatty oil retrieved from a coconut. At 76 degrees fahrenheit, coconut oil becomes liquid. Otherwise, it’s in a solid form. As a delicious superfood, it has many healthy properties:
-
They contain Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs), which are used as quick sources of energy. This provides therapeutic effects on brain disorders like Alzheimers and Dementia.
-
May increase energy expenditure, which means more fat burned!
-
Lauric acid found in coconut oil helps ward infection by killing bacteria, fungi and viruses.
-
Ketone bodies in coconut oil may help reduce appetite.
-
Helps improve blood cholesterol levels which in turn may reduce risk of heart disease over time.
-
Moisturizes skin, protects against sun damage, and repairs damaged hair.
-
Can boost brain function in Alzheimer’s patients.
The coolest thing about coconut oil? A study was done in 40 women with abdominal obesity, supplementing with 1 ounce of coconut oil per day. This lead to a significant reduction in both BMI and waist circumference in a period of 12 weeks.
Another study in 20 obese males noted a reduction in waist circumference of 1.1 inches. This was after 4 weeks of 1 ounce of coconut oil per day. These people aren’t adding exercise or restricting calories. They’re losing significant amounts of abdominal fat simply by adding coconut oil to their diet! Check out the study here!
So what type of coconut oil is best? Look for unrefined, organic virgin coconut oil (buy here).
Next, I’ll talk about uses of coconut oil for babies!
xoxo
