Home comfort boils down to six key categories. We’ll discuss each of them, and how they’ll create a warm and welcoming environment for your family.
Home Comfort Changes to Make:
1. Add texture and color with rugs or pillows
Textile designs can create a sense of comfort and warmth in any room. They come in different colors, patterns, shapes, and sizes, so the possibilities are endless! Popular types include Persian Rugs, Moroccan Rugs, Turkish Rugs, etc. Pillows on couches/chairs/beds also serve as an excellent way to add textural interest into your home’s decor.
Remember that you don’t have to stop at just one pillow – mix it up by adding two or three onto each couch/chair for added dimension! Also, remember that if you’re using bright colors such as orange or yellow, try pairing them with neut-like brown (e.g., a colorful orange rug with an earthy brown couch) to calm down the space.
2. Freshen up the air in your home
Many homes, especially in colder climates such as Canada and the US, get very stuffy. Window coverings (blinds/curtains), heating systems, and poor ventilation can contribute to a stale atmosphere. Here are some ways you can freshen up your home’s air:
- Open windows when temperatures allow for it! This is a great time to dust shelves or wipe down window sills since they’ll be visible outside the house.
- If possible, use an electric fan at low speed while you sleep at night. You’ll have fresh-smelling rooms by morning without running up high electricity bills.
- Use scented candles sparingly throughout the house – this will keep your space smelling nice but not too strong.
- Use a humidifier in winter to keep the air moist and prevent chapped lips/skin.
3. Organize closets and storage spaces
If you’re living in a small space, chances are your closets and storage spaces aren’t big enough to store everything. This can be very frustrating when trying to find things!
Here is what you can do; Install shelves in the garage or basement so that these areas become storage spots instead of just being used for parking cars/toys etc. You’ll have more room available if you move some items out of here (e.g., take toys up onto the main floor).
Designate one closet as an “organized” spot where everyone has their drawer unit or hooks with labeled hangers; this will act as a catch-all throughout the house – no need to look around for missing articles anymore! As you can see, making your home more comfortable doesn’t need to be difficult or time-consuming.
4. Create an inviting entryway
As soon as people walk into your home, they should feel welcomed. It’s the first thing guests see when they arrive, so it sets the tone for what to expect throughout their stay! Here are some ways you can create an inviting entryway:
Get rid of clutter – this means no more shoes everywhere and random articles on the floor (or worse, in front of a door). Instead, keep things neat and organized by storing away items after use instead of just dropping them wherever there is space.
Invest in good lighting – harsh lights or dark corners will make any area look uninviting, even if all other aspects were perfect. If possible, buy lamps with dimmer switches since these give off flattering light at the time too.
Wash the walls – a subtle hint of color in the background can make an otherwise bare wall look inviting. Wallpaper is another fantastic option if you’re looking for something more permanent.
5. Repair any broken appliances
Broken appliances can be incredibly frustrating – they’re expensive to replace, and you’ll lose the use of them for a period too. Here is what you can do; If something isn’t working, don’t wait until it gets worse before calling someone in, e.g., if your dishwasher breaks down after a year, call someone right away instead of waiting another three years, or get your electrolux spare parts and do it yourself.
If only one appliance is broken, but other (or similar models) are still functional, consider using these units first and reserving the broken unit for special occasions or emergencies only. This will save money since less electricity/water will need to be used overall. Repair things yourself! Many online tutorials show how to fix various appliances, so check these out before calling someone in.
You should also fix any lingering issues in the home that are causing you constant headaches and stress. For example, if your circuit breaker keeps tripping, get to the bottom of the issue or find a professional who can sort it out for you. That way, the issue won’t keep recurring and causing you stress.
6. Create a comfortable outdoors area
A comfortable outdoor area will be used more if it’s enjoyable to spend time in. Plan your landscaping carefully before getting started; pick plants that require less water and maintenance while also flourishing in the local climate (e.g., succulents for dry areas).
Many online resources provide data on average sunlight hours, etc.; use this information when deciding where different species/varieties should be placed around your home.
Finally, invest in comfortable outdoor furniture so you’ll want to spend more time outdoors. Look for pieces that are made of weather-resistant materials, have UV protection, and look great.
Updating your home can make it look more inviting and give off a better impression and level of comfort for the people living there. After all, you spend a lot of time there — home comfort is important.
